Off to San Jose!
I’m headed to MathFest 2007, the annual summer meeting of the Mathematics Association of America. I’ll be presenting some of my (non-AbiWord) research at one of the Pi Mu Epsilon student paper sessions, as well as attending others’ presentations and enjoying a talk by the one and only Donald Knuth. (Yes, I’m excited!)
If anyone has ideas of fun things to do in the general vicinity of San Jose State University - let me know. I’ll have my N800 with me and will check this post for comments. (Student-level, aka cheap, restaurant suggestions and local quirky attractions are especially appreciated.)
The downside: I’ll be silent on the code front until Monday. I’m currently wrestling with a run-time segfault, as well as a failed assert that seemed to magically appear.
Catch y’all later! Keep hacking, ants!
Cheap but good restaurants? Hmm. Try Chez Sovan (Cambodian). The food’s great. I’m told the roof leaks when it rains, but that won’t happen at this time of year.
Quirky local attractions? Hmm…maybe the Winchester Mystery House. It’s fun to see. Touristy, though, and maybe too pricey ($24).
Downtown San Jose has the Tech Museum and the San Jose Museum of Art. I don’t recall exact admission, but it’s not bad (single digit).
If you’ve got some extra time, I’d definitely recommend heading up to San Francisco. You can drive up there or take the VTA Light Rail then transfer to Caltrain. Hmm…I don’t even remotely know what all there is to do there, but definitely restaurants (some cheap, some not), shows (mostly not cheap, I think), and various events happening every weekend…check a calendar. Tourist spots I’d recommend: museums (art (MoMA), science (the Exploratorium would be a wonderful place to take kids), etc), of course the Golden Gate Bridge (free). The Japanese Tea Gardens (cheap, IIRC) right by it. Chinatown. And just walking around the city.
With a car, you can go further north to see Napa Valley. Lots of vineyards. Many are actually quite reasonably priced (Rutherford Hill’s combined tour and tasting is $15). They’re trying to get you to buy really expensive wine, but you can just say “haha! I’m broke!”
